When Galmon was established in 1982, the company comprised just four employees and a small fleet of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) housed in its headquarters at Jurong Industrial Estate in Tuas.
Then, the construction industry was using unsafe scaffolding, ladders and make-shift equipment for work-at-height activities.
Mr Desmond Ong, Galmon’s founder and chief executive officer, saw the need for reliable machines that workers can use to perform their tasks safely and more efficiently. However, knowledge about MEWPs in Singapore then was scarce at best.
Desmond explained: “The challenge was to convince people of MEWPs’ advantages, its cost effectiveness and how these machines can raise productivity. We faced a lot of resistance as MEWPs were completely new to Singapore at the time.”
Looking beyond the construction industry, Desmond and his founding partners worked hard to market MEWPs to any industry that could find use for them – providing on-site demonstrations and offering free trials. It took Galmon five years to educate the market about the benefits of using MEWPs.
By mid-1980s, Galmon had successfully introduced the use of MEWPs to the local filming, manufacturing and shipbuilding industries. In 1991, Galmon expanded its business operations to Malaysia and became a major distributor and supplier of MEWPs in the Asia-Pacific region.
Today, Galmon has grown to some 190 employees overseeing a fleet of more than 3,000 machines. The company’s quality products and professional services earned Galmon the reputation as a trusted provider of quality MEWPs in the construction, building maintenance, aviation, marine, manufacturing, commercial and public sectors.
With its expertise in work-at-heights safety, Galmon understands that relevant training is critical to ensure that workers use the equipment safely and correctly. Galmon became an Accredited Training Provider for MEWPs under the Singapore Ministry of Manpower in 2011. Its training arm Galmon Academy was established in the same year.
In 2013, Galmon Academy became the first PASMA training centre outside Europe, offering globally recognised certifications in mobile scaffold towers.
In 2015, Galmon unveiled Singapore’s first training facility dedicated to work-at-heights safety. The new 6,700 sqm Galmon Academy building in Tuas includes outdoor and indoor practical training grounds, 11 air-conditioned classrooms for theory lessons as well as a 300-pax auditorium ideal for holding safety talks and forums.
Galmon Academy also became an Approved Training Organisation offering Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) courses in boom, scissor and personnel lifts in 2015.
With the opening of the new training centre, Galmon is eager to do more to promote workplace safety excellence in the industry and to create a safer workplace in Singapore.
